So, my friends and I have a Kelsey 5x8 that is not printing in the center. We’ve got new ink rollers, new springs, packing isnt the issue. I’m going to test everything with my square and silk tissue. I need to know what to do if this is not a machining issue

sounds like you need to adjust the platen. you need to start with a normal packing. these kelseys were not made for deep impression, if you push them too hard you will break the press. you should look in the yellow pages on this site, there is a world of info there.

The greatest thing about these small platen presses is everything you can learn from printing on them scales up to the larger machines. It’s like learning to sail on a little Sunfish- the sensitivity forces you to develop skills and instincts will give you a lot of confidence if you choose to scale up later.

Have you read about makeready yet? I would suggest a good platen press book like Elementary Platen Presswork or Platen Press Operation.

Thanks for the suggestions. Makeready we can do, and deep impression is not our goal (we like our type and press), but now we have a place to start.
