Kaba Workshop

KABA workshop

A unique opportunity to work with the legendary Kaba ornaments that were designed by the late Bram de Does (1934–2015).

During a 2-day course, you will be working under the professional guidance of Thomas Gravemaker and Marina Chaccur.

After brief introduction to the history of ornaments – in particular Bram de Does’s Kaba – and the use of them, all participants will have their own set of Kaba ornaments at their disposal with which they will be creating their individual patterns and compositions.

These will then be hand printed by the participants on a 1960s Korrex test press using quality handmade papers.

Date: 12-13 March 2016, 10:00-17:00 hrs.

Location: LetterpressAmsterdam, Singel 214, 1016AB Amsterdam.

Thomas Gravemaker, who has extensive experience and knowledge in letterpress and graphic design, worked for many years in the UK and in France, as manager in a design group, before setting up his own studio. His passion for letterpress began prior to his training at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and has developed over the years. During these years, he has worked on private commissions, taught letterpress, lectured and talked at various conferences and events (http://letterpressamsterdam.com) .

Marina Chaccur, Brazilian designer based in the Netherlands, is passionate about type ornaments, which was the subject of her MA degree in London. The Kaba ornament holds a special place in her heart since she first laid eyes on one of Bram’s books about them.
She has worked with letterpress for ten years in a number of different workshops worldwide.
MA Type and Media (KABK) and MA Graphic Design (LCC) graduate, teacher, and ATypI
