Windmill pump making unusual noise

The pump on my 10 x 15 Windmill has recently begun making a noise that sounds like a car backfiring. It happens when I first turn the press on, about 8 - 10 times, getting quieter as it goes on and then everything is normal again. The noise occurs each time the platen is brought up to the closed position. If I stop the press for a few minutes, the pump will backfire one time when I start up again. Everything otherwise seems fine with the press.

Today the noise seemed louder at first than previously, so I’m concerned something is gradually worsening. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks for any ideas.

Probably the *Clack Valve* on the pump sticking, = the one that dumps the vacuum at the precise moment of release for the suction on the sucker bar, coincides with transfer to the gripper(s) of the sheet, possibly.!

Thanks, I will investigate.
