Weight of Albion Press

Hi, I look after 2 Albion presses, which are to be moved at the end of next year. They are to be dismantled and boxed up at a ground floor studio then transported to the 6th floor of another building approximately 5km distant. Bob Oldham was very helpful with information on dismantling and installing. It would also be very helpful if someone had any information on the total weights, or weights of the parts particularly the frames. One Albion is a double royal, platen 40 x 25”. The other is a double crown platen 34 x 23”.

Assume the platen and bed each weigh about 100-150 lbs, the frame / staple probably nearly or possible over 1000 lbs. I recommend using a hydraulic shop floor crane for disassembly and reassembly, and to handle the heavy parts. Use of “movers dollys”, readily available to rent or buy, which have four castered wheels each, for transporting the parts (assuming flat floors and no stairs) - one each for the platen and bed, and two for the frame. The rails on which the bed slides probably are about 50lbs and can be hand-carried carefully. Photos during disassembly make reassembly easier. Two people should be able to do the entire job.

And feel free to contact me for advice, which can be in realtime if you wish using one of the digital conferencing apps like FaceTime or Zoom. I have moved half a dozen such presses, at least one by myself, so it can be done easily and safely when done with tools.
