borderless printing / No margins

Is it possible set up a borderless, margin free print on a platen press? If so how do you do it?

Are you asking about full bleed on all edges? If so, then yes, is can be done, but necessitates a very slow feed - literally a hand-fed approach. The development of quick-release adhesives helped considerably with this approach. Prior to that, the positioning of stock was done by using stops having the same thickness. You will see the obvious difficulty with keeping the stock in place as the platen moves through its arc, and the lack of gripper after inking is complete; the paper must be carefully peeled from the forme. Still, patience is a virtue….
Bleed is normally accomplished by using over-sized stock then trimming to dimension. However, there’s an old saw that has: “If it will fit on the platen it can be impressed.” You’ll note the adage does not address ease nor result.

Where might I be able to get the quick-release adhesive?

I just printed tons of Christmas Cards with full bleeds. What I did was used paper strips and made an L shape and glued it to my Tympan paper.By doing this, you can corner the paper to stay in your exact place and not have anything be in the way of your printing or getting smashed. If you need me to explain more just ask.

Why print full bleed on pre trimmed paper? Seems like alot of work. Use a larger sheet and trim it down. If you don’t have access to a paper cutter an exacto knife and a ruler will take less time rolling your press slowly and using an adhesive.

I would not care however the paper Im using has rough edges so if I cut it straight it would not have the same effect that I was looking for…

Rough edges? As in deckle? If so there is a technique for accurate set-up.

yes deckle thats it, thanks
