“ink dog” definition please

The term “ink dog” is causing me confusion and yet I’ve seen it referenced a few times here on BP. Excuse my ignorance but is someone trying to coin a new term for the “pawl”? Is an “ink dog” actually referenced by any table-top press manufacturer by such name, or perhaps have some other provenance of which I’m unaware?

As part of the anchor and chain mechanism aboard ship there is a piece that serves to allow the chain to be brought in by the windlass, but will not allow it to run out when in position. It is a pawl, also called a dog.
I think for a printing press the term pawl is the better term.

Old sailor. Now printer.

Ah, another anchor clanker.

I have corrected the error in my recent post, though I am particularly tempted to shape my pawl into a small dog when I make it.
