Setting up to score a Z fold on a Heidelberg Platen

Hello everyone. I’m looking for some guidance when it comes to setting up some score rules for a Z fold. The fold is for a 6”x12” card folded in 3 (finished size 4”x6”) I’m wondering if I will have to flip the stock to score the second score line? or perhaps there is an easier way? the stock is 90 lb Cotton

Get ready for the onslaught! I assume you mean “Creasing” and not “Scoring”?
Depending on the grain direction of your stock, the piece may fold okay folding the one crease backwards. if there is ink on the back, there may a “cracking” issue.
Otherwise, if is a short run, it may be best to go 2 passes and hit it the second time. they do make a creasing matrix for a “Reverse Crease” although i have little experience with it, it may work ok for a long run. Depends on how fussy customer is.
A creasing die with filler, could be made that would have 2 rules in the middle to adapt for the reverse crease.

Eric is right, short run run 2 times, long run if you don’t want to buy a box of matrix, uses string score, in place of matrix use a string taped to your tympan paper, it would line up between the two creasing rules with a spacer in the middle usually a piece of 2 pt spacing.

How do you get the string straight and lined up between the creasing rules? I have heard of the string score…never seen it, but understand it is one of the best. Can you post pictures?

Take a strike on the base sheet and lay the line down as exactly as possible. the string will flex a little, kind like a “Floating counter” for embossing.

Thanks for all of the great advice. The run is 1500 so I think I’ll just flip the stock over and run through twice. However, there is no ink on the back so I’ll test using two score rules first. I love the string Idea, I’m just not understanding how to set it up. I use a die cut jacket when creasing.

Thanks, Mike I’m understanding now. Does sound very tricky though. I’ll see how it goes with regular matrix first and then try the string for the reverse crease if it’s not working well.

I’ve done it, as explained above. I used monofilament fishing line. I never used plain string. I still prefer creasing matrix.

I ended up running the first score and then flipping the stock and running the second score on the back. The Heidi ran like a dream as usual!!
