Paper for cards, which folds without cracking?

Hi there. I am about to have some nice quality 4.75”x4.75” cards (unfolded size, 9.5” x 4.75” ) printed letterpress. I am trying to find a paper which will take a nice deep bite but not crack on the spine fold. I would really appreciate any help or advice from anyone who has had experience of folding heavyweight papers.
Many thanks Val

If you want nice folds without cracking on thick paper you should be folding with the grain of the paper. The stock you have might have the grain running the wrong direction. The only answer in that case is to have new stock cut, paying attention to which way the grain runs.

i just ran into this problem with a thick stock cracking i asked around and was told to use channel matrix for scoring, it came out great, now i use it for all my scoring, it didn’t matter which way the grain ran it really worked great. good luck.

thanks to you both, thats really helpful.. I now just have to make my mind up about what paper! Phew…

What’s a “Channel matrix”? sorry for the stupid question.

Channel matrix is a quick way to achieve a proper crease on cardstock. Used to be stick down some 20-30pt stock where yor crease is going to hit make an impression and the use a utility knife to cut out a channel.Time consuming but still usesd when matrix doesn’t work or you just ran out. Channel matrix is 2 strips of card or plastic separated and width maintained by a mylar or steel shim. It comes with a plastic locater and 2 sided tape attached. To use place the locater on your crease rule remove the release liner make an impression on your platen or cylinder where it will affix itself remove the locater and you are ready to start creasing. This method is very common for short run folding cartons, pocket folders etc.Check my vids on youtube “937die” THANK YOU CARD for a demo
