Printing type and line art together

When printing type and an illustration in-line, I can’t seem to get enough coverage on the line art without the type getting too heavy. How is this usually done? Should the lines in the art be positioned parallel to the rollers or perpendicular?

I find it often better to print them separately.

If you position long lines (longer than the circumference of the rollers) perpendicular to the rollers you may run into ink starvation near the ends of the lines. It helps to have multiple rollers. Another potential problem is lines with sharp ends (such as metal rule) may cut into rollers if mounted perpendicular to the rollers.
