If you are going to put up pins and you are worried about damage to rules along the lay you can use the bristles of a nylon bristled yard broom just one off at its root fold it in half and push it fully home in the lay. take a pull or two and if the job lays up ok you know how high to make the pin , if you nip the form you will have done no damage to your base only beat the bristle ,it being softer than the steel of the likes of paper clips. When die cutting i use brass wire to make the pins as they just cut through without wrecking the cutting die.
