Vandercook Universal II

I have a Vandercook Universal II. It has a 220V 3 phase motor. It has been here in our shop unused for about 8 years. I would like to sell it but I am not sure of it’s value.

Do you have any photos of the press?

Just for comparison, recently KatRan Press sold their Uni-I and Uni-IV, both in beautiful condition.

I believe the Uni-I was sold on eBay for over $10K. The Uni-IV was sold for $14K.

PM sent. If you’re interested in selling it then I’m happy to make an offer based on current market prices and your willingness to assist/facilitate with freight loading.

Cool press. Seems to be transitional between the 219 and Uni III. Looking at Paul Moxon’s site, it appears these are much less common than the Uni I and Uni III- only 55 produced!

A former student of mine has one of these. Yeah, it does look like a transition between a 219 and a Universal III. Which is why, as the story goes, Vandercook was sued and had to take it out of production. Something like a newspaper chain in Florida ordered these and then thought, what the hell is this?

A bit further information on this. That Universal III that I bought was an early issue and it has a number of 219 parts on it. I guess the Universals sort of evolved out of the 219, or Vandercook just had a lot of extra spare parts and thought, what the heck.

Early Universals have the heavy old style gripper bars with brass adjusting nuts found on a 219 (Uni III) and No. 4 (Uni I) Later Universals have the lighter new style bars like on the SP series with delrin (plastic) end guides and aluminum adjusting knobs.

The Florida lawsuit Dan mentioned was about an employee in the engraving department of the Florida Times Union who in 1959 injured his hand on a Uni II Power press because of a engineering defect of the clutch mechanism. Vandercook initially prevailed, but lost the case on appeal.
