Sigwalt chase question

I just bought my first press - a very nice Sigwalt 4x6 - everything seems to work just fine. I need to get new rollers at some point, but for now, all is well!

My question is about the chase: the chase seems to be held in simply by friction. There is a wedge shape on both ends of the chase which slide into slots on the the frame. There does not seem to be any lock… is something missing or am I overlooking something… or is this the way it was designed?

Also - where’s the best / reasonable price place to get my roller cores rebuilt and recovered in rubber?

thanks
Joe

On the Sigwalts gravity does what the chase lock does on the Pilot and Kelsey and other presses. On my 6x9 the holding part is a round stub on the bed side of each roller rail, vertically in the middle of the rail. I find it an easy and reliable system. It’s really not friction holding it — the wedge is jammed tight behind the pin.

I suggest Ramco Roller in CA — they’re inexpensive, high quality, and fast.

Do you have an extra chase you are willing to sell. I have a sigwalt and everything I need except a chase. Chuck

Chases for the 4x6 Sigwalt and equivalent Golding Official #2 just use friction and gravity to hold the chase in place. My Golding will use either Golding or Sigwalt chases, they seem to be interchangeable. But they are not easy to find and not cheap. I got the Golding very inexpensively by trading a much rarer press that I found in a antique shop for it. I’ve picked up a couple of chases for it that cost more than the press.

Todd’s Press Time http://www.briarpress.org/30535 makes excellent rollers.

Do you have a chase that will fit my sigwalt press?

Careful!!!!!!!!!! I remember having a Sigwalt without a chase and tried to use a comparable Official Chase. It did NOT seat properly. Same principle but the design of the “nubs and slots” is different enough to cause problems.

Ooops! Now that I pondered that for a minute, it was the otherway around. I had an Offical without a chase and tried to use a comparable Sigwalt chase. The Sigwalt chase would not work in the Official. The different nobs and slots would not hold the Sigwalt chase in the Official press.
