Vandercook Worm Gear

I have Vandercook 320G and I am having problems with the oscillating roller. It gets stuck and won’t roll. I think it is a worn worm gear or crescent. I can’t figure out how to take the assembly apart to see what is wrong. I took the set screw that covers the crescent off and the allen screw out but I couldn’t get the crescent out. Can someone help me?

Completely back off and remove the crescent holder from the ink drum, the .250-20 set screw holds this in place, and then slide the oscillating roller away from the worm and the crescent should slide out. But do it gently. The stem of the crescent that fits in the holder needs to be greased and these often run dry after many years of neglect.

Thanks Fritz1. I noticed there is a slot in the end of the roller that I am assuming the crescent should slide through when you move the roller. Very late last night when I was trying to fix this it didn’t seem like the crescent would fit through this slot. Should it? I couldn’t get it to go through but it was late and I was frustrated.

are you posting on vanderblog as well………

Johathanjeclipse I haven’t posted there yet but I have done some searches there and read a lot. If I can’t get this figured out I’ll make a post there. Thanks.

I got the crescent out and examined it and the worm gear carefully. Sure enough one of the points on the worm gear had been broken. I filed it down as well as I could. The oscillating roller will now run if I put the assembly on the tollers with a specific orientation. If I put it on flipped 180 degrees it stops when the crescent gets to the broken part. Is there anything I can do short of finding snother worm
Gear?
