What is this??

This is part of the book bindery liquidation that we are involved with. not sure what this piece of machinery would’ve been used for. Any help in identifying issues and potential value would be greatly appreciated.

Might be a round backer, used to shape the spine of a sewn book block prior to casing in.

Bob

Does it have a knife on the back?

Yes, Bob is correct, it is a rounder and backing machine, called by some manufacturers a “roller backing machine” this one looks very similar to the one made by the George Sanborn Company in New York.

The book blocks were placed in the clamp and the roller was run backward and forward over the spine, rounding the backs of the signatures over so that the book would maintain the curved spine permanently, once it was cased-in.
