Dear Printers,
In correspondence between two printers in 1943, one of them complained to the other about “shellholes.” Does anyone know what a shellhole is?
Thank you.
1943, middle of the Second Word War. Probably complaining about the shell holes making life difficult when moving handset type and presses in a Regimental move.
Two questions: Do we know where either of these two printers were at the time of the correspondence and secodly were they talking about art (coated) stock?
I’ve seen references to certain bases for duplicate plates being “shell height’ but don’t recall if this was for stereotype or electrotype. I’d expect stereotypes to have more problems with holes.
Could you transcribe some examples?
