replacing the bottoms of type cases

I’m refinishing a Hamilton type cabinet. The cases are big—23x32—and undivided. The 1/4 wood bottom has buckled on most of them. I’d like to replace it. Any suggestions on what to replace it with?

thanks,
Heather

!/4 plywood= expensive. Door Skin=less so. Wallboard=in a pinch.

Masonite is the nearly perfect bottom for type cases, if you can get it. You may want to predrill nail holes for the small box nails that case-makers used,

It sounds like from your description, those are wood type cases - are they 2/3 size or full size? I have a 2/3 cabinet full of such cases for my wood type. The dividers are, I think, 1/4 inch wood with the ends cut down to 1/8 inch to fit the slots. Mine have 1/8” masonite bottoms.

As Bob said, Masonite, or what I used is the thinnest plywood that Home Depot sells (here in Canada at least), which is slightly under 1/4 inch. I don’t think they sell it in 4 X 8 foot sheets, but they have a rack of smaller sheets (4 X 4 and 2 X 4 foot).

You say they are undivided but I assume the cases have at least one brace down the middle from front to back, on the upper side. If they don’t have that, I would recommend putting one in, or the bottoms will probably sag if you put anything heavy in them.

Nope, no brace down the middle and I don’t want to put one in because the edges of the case have notches for the awesome notched dividers. I love them. I don’t want to lose them.

H Hale:

Masonite suggestion is good. Probably best.

Readily available in North America, often referred to as:
Smooth Brown Hardboard Wall Panel. 48-in x 96-in

Home Depot and Lowes stores generally carry good supplies.

Note: also available as whiteboard - but that is less moisture resistant.
