cleaning brass rule

I’ve acquired a bunch of old brass rule, much of which has black crud built up along one edge. I assume this is old ink combined with the dirt and dust of centuries. Is there an easy way to clean this stuff off, by soaking or something? I don’t want to spend weeks scrubbing each piece. Thanks!

May have to “Speriment” with solvents to find one that works for your crud. Steel wool? Bench grinder with a wire wheel? Finer grit (220-400) sandpaper? Brass as I’m sure you know is softer than steel rule, so start carefully. Once hardened, not sure if there is a way to magically remove problem “en-bulk”. Depends on just what you are up against.
