Ink disc not turning!

I just put on my new rollers and for some reason the ink disk isn’t turning! Also, the chase seems to be getting in the way of the rollers. The press moved smoothly until i put the chase in and then the rollers seem to interfere with it. Is this normal? AND the grippers seem to bang into the rollers as well.

I attached some pictures. Can anyone help?!

I’m not sure why the ink disc wouldn’t be turning — did it when you operated the press before you installed the rollers? It looks like the mechanism is all there. Check to be sure all the parts of the ink disc advance mechanism are moving freely.

Your rollers appear in the photo to be larger than the trucks, perhaps by as much as 1/8 inch. If so they might be rubbing both the chase and the grippers. The grippers can be adjusted to be closer to the platen, but unless the chase isn’t seated properly the rollers will have to be the problem. If they’re larger than the trucks, try wrapping the trucks with black vinyl electrical tape to build them up to the same diameter. That should fix the chase rubbing.

You may have to adjust the position of the cam upon which the escapement lever rides (cam is on the horizontal shaft behind the press bed). It is held in place with a set-screw, and could have worked loose or been pushed out of position at some point. Rotate the cam on the shaft until you get the amount of ink disk rotation you wish.

You want to make certain that the pawl isn’t trying to turn the ink disk while the rollers are on its surface.

question: The ink disc moves very VERY slightly, maybe one notch at a time. Is this correct?? I remember using other presses and hearing more “clicks” and seeing more of a turn.

J henry: Can you possibly label one of my photos and show me??

As AdLib said, check the roller/truck diameters. If the rollers are larger diameter than the trucks it can cause problems.

If the ink disc doesn’t turn freely when the rollers aren’t on it, one notch at a time is probably right. Oil it and see if it will spin more freely. Any rotation at all will be enough when you’re printing, to keep the ink evenly distributed.

Thanks everyone! :)

Here is a picture with call-outs for the ink disk cam. If you want more movement, you need to turn the cam on the shaft to make the adjustment in how far the lever moves.
