Hot Foil Stamping on Kwikprint 86

I just got the Kwikprint a few ago. Still learning. I purchased a die from die maker that was 2.5” x 3/4” and I stamped about 100 cards and it turned super great!

I set a name in 36 point Tempo Bold Cond to see how that would look.

I stamped one or two samples that turned out great, after the second stamping to look all broken up. And, I tried brand new foil and it did the same thing.

Now, I am using a 6 point ludlow slug and 36 point strip material.

Could it be the old 36 point strip material.

Does the type holder on your Kwikprint have the temperature gauge? It might be that you let it get too hot. Many foils do well around 250 degrees but each is different. On my Kwikprint 86 the Robotemp is usually set near 2 to have it stabilize around 250 degrees.

Oh, that might the problem. I been letting it get to 275 or 300.
I cut it back to see if that the problem.

Also lead type will get worn down fairly quickly because of the heat, especially thin or small type.

Temperature is the likely culprit.

I bought a lot of old foil from various mfgs and there was a 100 degree difference in the ideal temp between some rolls.

old foil…….. if it is over 10 years old, should just throw it out. A) as you have seen, it becomes very unpredictable; aging and storage issues. B) the new foils out there are far superior in work-ability and color consistency. it really is not that expensive. if you are worried about minimums or small cuts, contact me. we can work something out.

I tried the lower temp last night and it worked great.
Yes old foil is worthless.
I got some with the purchase of the machine.
One roll worked the next two didn’t.

It was new foil I tried that the type didn’t work well with at the 275 - 300 setting.

Last print I kept it at 200 and the stamping came sharp and great of the 18 Tempo Bold I set.

That’s good to hear. I would suggest keeping a type high gauge handy to check the type height after stamping. And if you have your Ludlow working again, you might prefer to use Ludlow slugs.
