10x15 C&P Paper Size

Hi there!

I’m in the process of purchasing a 10x15 C&P and was wondering if it would be possible to print on an 11x17 sheet of paper with it.

Thanks in advance!

I’ve run 11.5 x 17.5 on a 10x15 C&P using extension feed guides. Feeding paper is not that hard but make-ready on a large form is a real challenge. I had the benefit of a long fountain and a rider roller (and still had to double-roll); inking a large form without them is not recommended.

I have successfully printed 11x17 sheets on my 10x15 C&P, and each sheet contained 2 full pages of type, some with illustrations, and one sheet with halftones on both sides. I was printing from linotype material with hand set heads, linoleum cuts as well as regular photoengravings. But that was back when I was a teenager and hadn’t been told what the limitations of the press were. Now that I know better, I’d never try that again. And not knowing better at the time, I did that publication 2 years in a row. The second year’s effort contained the sheet with halftones again and included a drawing done by one of the art students in my high school, Joan Baez, so looking back, that printing job has added meaning to me now.

And while in college, I continued to print things that we are warned now days shouldn’t be tried on platens like the C&P. Here’s a link to a booklet I did that contained several large halftones printed at the same time with linotype material and hand set heads. Most impressive presswork, Fritz.

Great work on that halftone Fritz. One question, though. Is the stock coated or no?

Coated gloss and I think it was 70# paper. I don’t mind working with coated paper and prefer gloss over dull coated. I have done long runs with coated stock using halftones with my Miehle Vertical and since it has an offset spray unit, and by going easy on the ink, I have no problem with offset (or “setoff” if you’re of the age that throws around the word Font to describe all things related to type).
