Why did Challenge number their wedge quoins?

I just wondered why Challenge put numbers on their wedge quoins? I have a good quantity of these and most of the numbers are different. Does anyone know for certain whet these numbers indicated? Perhaps casting mold positions?

By the way, does anyone need some wedge quoins?

I am almost certain the number indicates the mold/casting position, like leaflets radiating outward from a tree branch, they had multiple, probably many, many individual quoins
(because they are small) in each pour-casting.

Just like skiyou said, it’s most likely mold position. I’ve never seen a wedge quoin in person, but most appear extremely small compared to more common cast iron items such as cooking skillets on up to engine blocks. They may have laid out 30-50 quoins or more in a mold to make it worth their time.
